Three minute reads for audio engineers and music makers

Hey Reader, here's this week's Take Three email.

TAKE ONE: QUICK LINKS

TAKE TWO: RECENT RELEASES

Here are a couple of recent mixes that were released. Fun fact, "If You Wanna Fly" is one of the first mixes I did where I fully trusted PhaseLock to handle the drums.

TAKE THREE: YOU CAN JUST MAKE THINGS

To be honest I'm feeling swamped. Overwhelmed. I'm going to make my Take Three super short this week.

The reason I'm feeling overwhelmed is because I have this problem where every time I have an interesting idea to build something, I just take the first step towards it, and then I kind of just keep going.

And then I come up for air sometimes and think "Why did I start making all these things at once?"

I'm learning to finish things before I start new ones, and I'm very much still a work in progress.

But I think it's important to remember that we live in a world where you can just have an idea about making something and just take one step. And then if that goes well, take another one.

Some behind the scenes info for you on the state of PhaseLock:

  • I still don't have a signing certificate from Microsoft for the Windows installer. I'm debating just getting an individual certificate and having all my releases on Windows signed by "Thomas Dulin" instead of waiting around for a Jelly Audio one.
  • The standalone app that comes with PhaseLock needs a bit of polish. (Fun fact, PhaseLock actually started as standalone Rust app and the engine in the plugin is the same engine as the app).
  • The main sales page for PhaseLock is very close but I need to create more "before and after" examples.
Beta users, if you have any you're willing to share, please hit reply!! I'll credit you if you wish.
  • I feel really good about the plugin UI, the engine, and the pricing structure that I have in mind. PhaseLock will have a perpetual one-time price, as well as an option to pay 93% less for a month-to-month license, specifically for folks who might only need it every now and then.

When I step back and look at all that, it actually calms me down a bit. This is totally doable.

And trust me, if I can build all this stuff by myself (with your help), you can absolutely start making whatever it is that you're inspired to make.

Take one step!

Until next week, happy music making, Reader.

I goofed yesterday and I feel very embarrassed about it. I was editing my Take Three email "3 most common Phase myths" in two different tabs, and I hit SEND on the wrong tab, so the last point I was making was completely missing from the email. 😂 I'll finish my thought below. The bright side is, now you know for sure these emails aren't written by AI! Myth #3: "Time alignment = phase coherence" I totally understand the temptation to think this way. We try to manually align capsules of...
